According to AA, Alcoholism is a progressive illness that can’t be cured but can be arrested. Alcoholism is caused by a combination of physical sensitivity to alcohol, mental obsession with drinking, and loss of choice over alcohol.
25 June 2024 — A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that around 3 million deaths per year were attributable to alcohol consumption, accounting for 4.7% of all deaths
Alcoholism kills more individuals in the age group of 15 to 39 than other age groups. The percentage of alcoholic deaths from this age group is nearly 45% of all alcoholic deaths.
Disease of Alcoholism is a causal factor in over 200 disease and injury conditions, and is also linked to mental and behavioural disorders. Liver diseases, Road injuries, Violence, Cancers, Cardiovascular diseases, Suicides, Tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS are some of them.

What we have learned about alcoholism
The first thing we have learned about alcoholism is that it is one of the oldest problems in Man’s history. Only recently have we begun to benefit from new approaches to the problem. Doctors today, for example, know a great deal more about alcoholism than their predecessors knew only two generations ago. They are beginning to define the problem and study it in detail.
While there is no formal “A.A. definition” of alcoholism, the majority of our members agree that, for most of us, it could be described as a physical compulsion, coupled with a mental obsession.
